...the CEO of the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation in Alexandria, Va., sees a worrisome trend he hope to turn around.

According to RBFF's recent 2014 Special Report on Fishing, for the first time since 2010 fewer anglers headed out to local lakes, rivers or oceans to catch fish. The study found that the sport of fishing lost 1.2 million participants during the survey year of 2013.

Some facts of interest:

? Almost 46 million Americans, or 15.8 percent of the U.S. population, participated in fishing in 2013.

?Collectively, fishing participants made 904 million annual outings, or an average of 19.7 outings each.

? Fishing as a child has a powerful effect on lifelong fishing ? 83.7 percent of adult anglers fished as a child. Youth participation is also up 8 percent in 2013 for 6 to 12 year olds.

? Parents introduce 81.8 percent of 6-12 year olds and 76.6% of 13-17 year olds to fishing

? More than 83 percent of fishing trips involve a partner.
