Never got into fishing for freshwater drum until we caught this guy and a bunch more. This drum was the biggest the rest was around the 2 foot range. What great fighters they are. Just curious do people eat them.

I have had some and they tasted pretty good, fillet skin cut into cubes put in boiling water(with some salt in it) serve with melted butter for dipping like lobster. Have also heard of people smoking them.

Search online for “A Guide to Utilizing the Freshwater Drum,” first published by Ohio State University in 1982 by David Kelch, the Ohio Sea Grant Extension Specialist. Its an old pamphlet converted to PDF online. Awesome read if your into drum, sheephead, gaspergou. Like a lot of fish that are considered "trash fish", they can be eaten and if prepared well, tastes great. Keeping fish under 20 inches and iced fast is best and fillet and skinned, removing all red meat. You can also collect their ear bones, looks like a white pearly stone. Native americans used to make jewelry out of them

When I was a teenager in Florida my friend and his dad took me on fishing trips with them when we went after bowfin and gar, 2 other "rough" fish that put up a terrific fight. ^! My two cents

I am sure they do indeed put up a good fight. So many so called "trash fish" are underrated. I need to get busy and start nailing some carp on the fly.

i hear thats fun. So far gave it a coupe of trys, even seen some carp swimming around. None took the fly. Thinking next time im putting on a worm just to see how great the fight is.

Berkeley makes a very small plastic worm, I think it's called the trout worm, that impaled on a small hook casts well on a 7 weight fly rod. Very realistic looking worm. Maybe spray it with scent attractant and give that a try. My two cents
