This question seems to always be talked about by Fisherman on the Ice. I personally don't think they do. I have drilled holes and after cleaning them out and lowered my bait I have caught Fish right away. I can see maybe if Fishing shallow water. What do you think?

depending on the depth of the water , sespending fish will move off when drilling holes i have seen fish move off the vex screen just by people walking by your holes and crunching the ice with there cleets , snow seams to help quite this down

Hey PaJns, good ?....
I never used to think augers bothered the fish, but I had a hand auger (now attached to 36v drill) I went to the freeze-out up on the bay 2 years now...and seemed to catch all my fish early before the army of gas augers arrived. It was really obvious to me last year. Between all the foot traffic & multiple augers, it turned real slow, real quick. I just try to be quiet as possible & don't worry about catching fish at social gatherings.

I use to always hand drill. But now I went High Tech and bought a Gas Auger. Seems hand drilling got alittle harder to do...could be age...LOL But I will post what my finding are using the new auger this Ice season. There have been a few times when I was drilling another hole with the hand auger that my flags started to fly. And other times they never moved. I do agree that drilling...walking on the ice affect the fish.

Naw, it's not age PaJns--- its just with the hole in the ozone layers and the coming New Ice Age- the ice is getting harder!
I don't ice fish any more (the New Ice Age is making it colder, too!), but when I did, I used a hand auger. (Heck- I started by using a heavy spud, but got the auger after I found out what the cord loop through the end on the spud was for!) It does seem to me though, that especially in shallower water (20 foot or less?), that all that noise would chase the fish off. With a hand auger, I'd sometimes have the best luck right after I augered a hole- almost like the grinding attracted the fish! I'm interested in seeing what you hard-core purple finger people think> Please post thoughts. Best---- JoeW |

I have drilled holes with both a gas auger and hand auger and placed tip ups in the hole and had them go off within 30 seconds. As long as theres snow on the ice i dont it effects them at all. If there isnt snow i have noticed it takes a while longer to catch the first fish. So i think it has more to do with foot traffic and if the fish can see you or not rather than the auger

In early ice season, it appears that the fish are more skittish to noise. However as the season progresses, the fish get used to all that noise and sometimes they are attracted to it.
