Hey, that's a beauty of an 'eye ! I think only Lake Erie guys call them Yellow Pike. Think that differentiated them from "Blue Pike" which haven't been seen in Lake Erie in many years! I do remember making the trip from Oil City to Lake Erie with my Dad and uncle and we'd come home with a burlap bag filled with Blue Pike! That was back in the 50's! I remember-- two hooks on a line, hook the first bite then wait, then set the hook again, and more often that not you'd get a double! Commercial over fishing is supposedly why they disappeared. love to come down there more and harass them river eyes.they always have cool markings and colors. this one sat out of a cooler for 4 hours, and then rode in the back of my truck, thats why it has all those odd stripes.

Hi bui--- No pics, that was back in the 1950's. Just the memories of leaving Franklin PA in the dark, driving to Erie PA with my uncle and Dad in his old Studeabaker, getting on the party boat and fishing all day! Coming home after dark and watching my Dad and uncle clean a sack full of Blue Pike!
Funny, a few years ago buddy and I were fishing Georgian Bay in Canada, that runs into Lake Erie. We bumped into a school of walleyes. Normal Canadian Walleyes from there are a gray-yellow color. But these were dark olive with a distinct blue-ish cast to their backs! All were released, but I really suspect we ran into one of those rumored schools of Blue Pike that survived the commercial fishing of the 50-60's! No camera along, so no pictures, dang! Eh, memories are usually better than any pictures show! Best---- JoeW |

Yeow! PaJns put me onto this! This guy also claims to have caught "extinct" Blue Pike (or Blue Pickerel, Blue Walleye- all the same!) AND he has pictures! I knew those were Blue Pike in my post above! Here's the link to a good read:
http://www.walleyeheaven.com/blue-walleye.htm Just like I remember them! Thanks PaJns! Best---- JoeW

Yea, the "blue Pike" is the same as "Blue walleye" as far as I know, but I 've read one report that says differently. Funny how the same fish can have different names in different locales. The "Walleye", or "Walleyed Pike", is called a "Yellow Pike" here in WNY. In Ontario, they're known as "Pickerel". I'd really like to think the "blue Pike" is making a comeback in the Great Lakes! I remember catching burlap sacks full of them back in the 1950's! Of course, I'd like to see a bag limit on them this time- but back then, they were as common as Perch!
Man, you got me thinking warm weather fishing again, but that's way on the other side of the calendar now! Best---- JoeW Last edited by JoeW; 07-04-2011 at 07:34 AM. |
