Cool Finds from Auctions

Hey Folks...ever go to auctions? My dad has been an auction nut ever since I can remember. These old country auctions he frequents have everything from livestock to antique glassware to...yep...VINTAGE TACKLE. Most times its just some boxes of rusty melted down plastic lures(covered with chicken poop) but sometimes a real gem will come across the block. Here are a few pieces I've snagged, nothing rare or spectacular, but picked up for a song. The reel is a Langley Cast-Rite 380A. The Martin salmon plug was a long way from home...not much salmon fishing in southern Ohio! The Pikie...you guys know what that one is.

Geez--- that's nice stuff mo! I've almost given up on auctions around here-- as soon as the auctioneer mentions "old fishing tackle" in his ad, well he better set up extra seats, because there'll be fifty tackle collectors showing up! MOST of them not knowing anything about values or even what the tackle IS! result--- $5 lures selling for $25, etc. What I now do, is go to the auctions where old tackle ISN'T mentioned! A lot less competition when some old stuff IS there! And yep--- those out in the middle of nowhere auctions are the best! Those people never threw out anything!

And yep- amazing how California lures end up here, and stuff made near here, ends up in California! I once advertised for a little known Buffalo, NY made bait I wanted. Guy from Florida called and had one and said he had gotten it from his Dad who used to live in Buffalo! Well, it's back home now!

I like that Martin with the string rigged hooks! Best---- JoeW

Langley tackle of San Diego, CA, good for its time and long gone. I have two Langley spinning reels, both about the size of a Mitchel 302. One seems to work OK and one that has surely been misused. I also have a couple of Langley "DeLiars" (later on marketed by and marked as ZEBCO).

Cool stuff again mo!!! Our auction season is about to start, I saw a flyer out today. Maybe I oughta take time to hit some this season. My Dad, at 82, still hits every one he can. He picked up a very, very good Bear, Black Bear, Grayling bow, for me for $35.00 with THE ORIGINAL ARROWS in usable ocndition the late owner bought with it. I just hung up the arrows but they could be used. I believe I'm going to tell him to pick up some old fishin' stuff.

Aucitons can be a great place to find some out of the ordinary stuff. I surely enjoy the farm aucitons around here but as has been alluded to, you better know your prices. Bidders wars can get.....well, I'll say it, stupid!!!!

Cool

Here's another auction find...it's a C.C. Roberts Mud Puppy. It is designed so the lure body pops off after you hook a fish, the theory being the fish doesn't have the lure for leverage to throw the hook. If you're fishing in a river, you better land that musky quick...before your lure body floats away! These baits are very popular with fishermen AND collectors. This particular one looks as though it was popular with the muskies too!
