Ok folks I need some help here . I really hate to do small lures mostly because my hands aren't as nimble as they were once . Locally here there are few trout to be fished so if ya'all don't mind tell me your favorite stream trout design . I'm in one of those positions where I can't say no . My lawyer wants a bunch varied styles from jigs to spinners . ARRRGGGG! Just shoot me !

Toad! Two things:
1. Don't you have pneumonia? Rest, liquids, whatever else the doc says! No fumes! 2. Trout jigs! Now you're talking! Although I don't fish them as jigs, my White " boo fly" is my go-to fly for not only steelhead, but also for stream and smaller trout! Also for smallmouth! In my mind, and from my experience, there is only one pattern: all white marabou. Even better is if you can find/use a "pearlized" body on it, with a few sprigs of pearl mylar or "pearl flashabou" at the tail. See pic. I tie them as lightly weighted flies with just two links from a bead chain as eyes and weight. I prefer to fish them straight line, but in current, I often use a small float with one or two small split shot about a foot up the leader. This pattern can easily be adapted to a jig for spin fishermen! I don't know what weight, but overall length should be just a couple inches. I've seen "imitation boo flies" as jigs, often with a flourescent head (red, chartreuse most popular). But by far, my pattern choice is the white/pearl marabou. Good luck, and stay away from those fumes! Best---- JoeW Last edited by JoeW; 10-21-2011 at 12:23 PM. |

toad, sorry I can't help you. I've never fished jigs for trout and my favorite flys are pretty small. Rarely do they work on hatchery trout.

Joe, Brother do I ever have pneumonia. I feel raggidy'ern a can of kraught . About all I am going to do Is gather some info until I can get straightened up . Hope to collect some sure fire secret patterns and answer the emails.I'll add some boo flies behind a jig head .
sharps4590 Most of the trout here are hatchery trout. You just about have to drive out of state to find anything else , There are a few browns around some of the dams but they tend to hang in the restricted fishing area's .Ain't no trout worth the fine the warden is going to give you for being up next to those gates.

Pneumonia a few years ago. 7 days weak as a puppy, fever, couldn't move or even eat. Chicken soup was all I could eat. Lost 10 pounds! Then anothert week to get back energy, etc. i actually coughed more, and coughed up "pink", after i started feeling better. Nothing to mess with, buddy.
Sharps- ever fish a streamer or a little jig under a light float? Man-- killer, especially in current. I've stood in one spot on out local streams and taken a dozen stockers without ever taking a step. Not "purist" fishing, but it sure beats going after them with a gob o' worms and a 1/2 oz split shot on an 8 lb spin rig. Of course don't know if those bamboo could hold up to the stress of casting a float/streamer. maybe should think about a graphite! LOL! Hey terrific squirrel gun. Man- that's vintage hunting! Take care Toad (and I mean it!), and best to both of you. JoeW |

When I fish for trout I usally use ether spinners, such as a panther martin or rooster tails I also use a kastmaster or super duper #503. or bait.
the only time I did use a jig if my memory servers me right. was an all white jig. with a small silver coorado blade attached to it. I was fishing right after the hatchery truck left the lake. I do not know if the fish hit the jig because they were hungry, of becuase it irratated them. I am not much for trout fishing. sorry for the lack of info. Now stay in bed and get some rest, God speed for your recovery.

OH YEA I LOVE JIGGING ACTION FOR THOSE BIG LAKE TROUT ! AND WALLEYES I think the action of jig comes into place because your in their zone or their house if you will for the lakers its on the side or atop a hump where they are feeding ,, walleyes its the same if its weeds or rocks and when tipped with a curly tail I gurantee its the action that causes the preditory strike ,alot of smallies have been hooked by that method by me too . its my favorite way to fish ,jigging that is!

If you want to tan out that mulie hide get some regular old 20 mule team borax stretch the hide skin up . Rub that in good and let it set 3 or 4 days. You can add salt to the mix . It soaks into the hide makes for good fishing jigs. But then you probably know that already given our common background . I'm back to my old honery self almost . Time to get back to the man cave so I can use those new molds.
