Thumbs up Vintage Lure Game!

Haven't posted any old timers here for awhile- let's make this post a just-for-fun guessing game! I played this game many times when I would set up an informative display of old tackle at Boy Scout "Hunting & Fishing" days. Darn if those young kids didn't guess correctly all the time!

The Creek Chub Bait Company (Indiana) made their reputation in the 1920-30's by advertising "True To Nature Lures". They made and painted baits to look as closely as possible like the "critters" fish are used to feeding on! They named their lures according to what they imitated. Hence they called them the Crawdad, Chub Wiggler, Pikie Minnow, Gar Minnow, Sucker Minnow, Bug Wiggler, etc. Take a look at these-- big deep diving lip, beady eyes, beautiful colors, and a pair of pearl spinners on a shaft at the tail! Fishermen called them "coffee grinders" because they were tough to crank through the water- like grinding on an old time coffee grinder!

Creek Chub had a particular "critter" in mind with this design in 1931. Guess what it was called! One word name, and remember- the name reflects what this was designed to imitate. Post your guesses here- I'll let you know when we have a winner!

Good luck--- JoeW

2. Giant Water Bug.

Default We have a winner!

Congrats Jgreene49! The Creek Chub "Beetle" is what it was called!

They also made a slightly smaller version, with only one pearl tail spinner, called the "Baby Beetle"- that makes sense! I often wonder if some of these off-the-wall lures actually caught fish, but since Creek Chub made them from 1931 all the way until 1954, I guess someone was having luck with them!

Hope you all had a little fun! Best----- JoeW

That's OK, b or b. Jgreene49 was just taking advantage of a "creative learning enhancement opportunity". He should be given extra-credit. Best----- JoeW
