Two years ago, while going through the Lip'Em N Rip'em facebook page, I saw a friend request from an organization called Reel Recovery. I asked Bill what he thought of them, and he agreed that he's never heard of them. He gave me permission to look at the organization and see if they would be a good fit for the show.

Robert Bernard replied to my Email and explained to me what Reel Recovery was about: "we are a national non profit organization that takes men with cancer on destination based retreats." After losing a dear client from the disease, cancer is something that affects me deeply so I looked more into the organization. As it turned out, they were looking for a destination somewhere in the Midwest, and a Midwest events coordinator.

I filled out the paperwork and got the job. Bob flew into La Crosse to meet me, and I showed him the area. He and I became fast friends and co workers. Bob loved the area so much, that he's come back here about a dozen times, and on two occasions stayed at my place in my extra bedroom.

Early part of this year, Reel Recovery determined that Onalaska (my hometown) will be named as the September retreat, with Iowa as being the secondary. I have to say the experience has been tremendous. I've been to several Trout Unlimited and Federation Fly Fishing meetings as well as several other events promoting Reel Recovery, and have been humbled by the amount first hand accounts I've heard about the disease both from survivors and by families.

If 'yall ever get a chance to check them out, I encourage you. It's a fun organization and there are enough regional events you can probably find one in your area.

The retreat that I was incharge of putting together has 15 men signed up: "The Reel Recovery Midwest Retreat held in Onalaska is at 15 men! We have 10 Wisconsin; Iowa 2; Michigan 1; Minnesota 1; Illinois 1".

My next phase is to find fishing buddies to pair up with these 15 men.
