Default Porgy Fishing NY Bight

Anyone who has been fishing for Porgies (Scup) will tell you how much fun it is. It's almost like fishing for Bluegills if I can make a freshwater comparison. Porgies are a fast fish and they are known as master bait thieves. If your not paying attention to your line, or if you are, but too slow to react..your bait is gone. In general, Porgies tend to hang around structure, reefs, bridge pilings, rocky bottoms etc..The most common setup for these fish in NY and Long Island is the High-Low rig:
Sinker weight will depend on the depth and current. I tend to use anywhere from 3-5oz bank sinkers depending on where I'm fishing for them. Now as for rod and reel..You want to use something in the inshore class of rods, med-med heavy 7ft rod. You want a nice sensitive rod. Same with the reel. You don't need a big reel for this type of fishing as you will be holding your rod and reel all day. As for main line I use braid. Braid is a must, because of the sensitivity and zero stretch. 30lb is the magic number. Always use a leader in saltwater fishing. I use flurocarbon leader, anywhere from 20-40lb depending on the structure. Hooks I use gold bait holder hooks in a size 2 with a red bead. Now as for bait, the most common and most productive bait is clams. Big ol sea clams, cut into strips and your good to go.
I fish out of Jamaica Bay, NY...Some productive spots are the Rockaway Reef, Marine Park Bridge, Floyd Bennett Field , Mill Basin and my secret spot, which won't be a secret anymore is green buoy 1. GPS coordinates:40*34.941 N 73*51.667 W
Porgies are fun to fish for and great way to introduce children to fishing if the salt is your only option. They also make for some very good eats! Have fun and thanks for reading!
