Default Reel Maintenance

Here is a subject starving for attention, considering how important it is. Proper reel maintenance and lubrication are often overlooked, and with today's reels packing up to a dozen bearings, the right care is even more critical. Dry, dirty bearings are worse than no bearings at all, reducing what was once an incredible devise to a useless piece of junk. There are quite a few makers of maintenance products for reels...but I found an Ardent kit that has everything needed to maintain reels...all in a handy case. So if you bought an expensive reel, protect your investment, keep it properly maintained. Here's a pic of that Ardent kit:

Being a dental laboratory owner, I have plenty of intricate tools, instruments, and equipment that I use for cleaning and maintainance of my reels. I use white lithium grease to lightly lubricate gears and Penn Lube reel oil for oiling bearings.
I also polish the edges of my spinning reel spools with acrylic polish to make them as smooth as possible to increase casting ease and distance, as well as the insides of the line guides on all my rods to decrease line resistance. Automotive paste wax will work for these polishing jobs as well.

Good info MO. I have a kit that I made up with various supplies. Sometimes it is nice to sit at my desk with a few reels and remember days past as I clean and lube them. Guess it dosn't take much to keep old folks happy huh?

Often abused and often overlooked. Great reminder to take care of things.

Thanks MO, I have the same kit with a few added items to go with it......works great!!! BorB I'm gonna try the spool and line guide polishing thing to see what happens....never really thought of that!!! Since I don't have access to acrylic polish, is there any particular auto paste wax that you recommend??

Turtle Wax should work just fine.

Here's another tip for us saltwater guys..as you know, saltwater is probably the most corrosive element on the planet. Get an 8oz spray bottle (doesnt have to be 8oz) and put about 1table spoon of regualr white vinegar, dilute with the 8oz water. Spray it on the surface of your rod and reels. Let it sit for abit then wash it off with plain water. The acid in the vinegar will help take off the salt and grim, leaving your gear looking new. You can also use it on your boat rails or just about anything that is vulnerable to the salt. Also, you can use it to wipe down the screen of your gps, just use less vinegar, maybe 1 teaspoon.
