OK fish-heads...class is in session!
Today's lesson is on the Zebco 733 Gold reel. If you've read any of my posts around here, you probably know that I use this reel for wacky worm fishing. Nothing I've used will toss a weightless worm easier or farther. I fish three or four days a week, so my equipment gets used...and when I broke the pushbutton on this reel...It wasn't because it was a cheap piece of junk. On the contrary, these reels are a great value, its hard to find a better reel for $25! When I checked Zebco parts...the new pushbutton was going to cost me $12...and I saw a whole reel on eBay for $18...so I just ordered the reel from eBay. Here's where things get funky. I took my old reel off the rod and strapped on the new one...what's up here?...this thing seems slow...and too heavy! I did some research and found out the gear ratio was changed from 3.4:1 to 2.6:1. This translates to a line recovery of 25 inches per turn of the handle reduced to 17 inches! Also, the weight gain is the body being changed to aluminum instead of plastic. This is one time I'll say "give me plastic". The aluminum body is a downfall of all of Zebco's premium reels. It's always this heavy, bulky, solid frame. They should "skeletonize" it like their Quantum offerings. At any rate...the bottom line is...the old 733 Gold is a better choice than the new one. Telling them apart couldn't be easier, just look at the photo. The light gold one is the keeper...the "orange" gold one will do for parts!![]() P8150007.jpg

AT,
I checked there and all I could find was the newer type...the one with the "orange" gold. If you did see the good one...post a link to it. ![]()
