Anyone who has been fishing for Porgies (Scup) will tell you how much fun it is. It's almost like fishing for Bluegills if I can make a freshwater comparison. Porgies are a fast fish and they are known as master bait thieves. If your not paying attention to your line, or if you are, but too slow to react..your bait is gone. In general, Porgies tend to hang around structure, reefs, bridge pilings, rocky bottoms etc..The most common setup for these fish in NY and Long Island is the High-Low rig:
I fish out of Jamaica Bay, NY...Some productive spots are the Rockaway Reef, Marine Park Bridge, Floyd Bennett Field , Mill Basin and my secret spot, which won't be a secret anymore is green buoy 1. GPS coordinates:40*34.941 N 73*51.667 W Porgies are fun to fish for and great way to introduce children to fishing if the salt is your only option. They also make for some very good eats! Have fun and thanks for reading! |
