Thumbs up Tricks that work but are so odd that others think they are a joke

got any tips or tricks that are so odd that others think they are a joke when you try to share them with others? i wanna hear them trust me i wont think they are a joke i have a few odd tricks my self that i use. this is for all fishing as far as i'm concerned i just wasn't sure where to put it fresh water or salt water forums so i put it here. ill even get it started with one that i had a bunch of men tell me i had to be joking about for catching bass fast and easy.

take a large onion with a strong smell ( makes eyes water bad ) cut it in to 1/2 inch peaces and place one peace on your hook and cast it out it never fails. they love the stuff.

Ha! I believe in scent! I have successfully used bacon, and I've heard of a kid that caught a good Northern Pike with a hot dog! I have also used a fly with a little stick attached to it to take trout (Caddis larva imitation?). My brother once took a 4-5 pound Bass on a gum wrapper wrapped around a bare hook.

But ONION for Bass is unbelievable!

Great thread- I'll be watching! Best----- JoeW

The biggest cat fish I caught 18 lbs.I used a chunk of Ivory bar soap as bait.
I have caught several cat fish this way.
I have also used corn, bacon and cook carrots for trout.

I will have to give the onions a try

Do they have to be cooked carrots, cwd? Hmmmmm- trout ARE picky! I may have to start carrying a deli sandwich for fishing! What you guys have described so far is the makings of a good sub or poboy (except for the Ivory soap)!

But ONIONS! Man, that's a good one bw! And yes- I'd think you were crazy! Best----- JoeW

JoeW I do not know if they have to be cooked carrots or not.
the only time I have used them has been while camping, and they were out of a can
so I figured if they were canned they were cooked.
I'll have to try raw ones.

here is one more for yall cut a peace of stocking 1/2 inch longer then the worm you plan to use by 4 inches and wrap it around the worm then place it on the hook like normal and cast. when the fish takes the worm the stocking get tangled in to the gills and it makes it harder for the fish to get off the hook and easier for you to catch all though they do put up a good fight. this works on salmon, pike and any other fish you can catch using a worm and the worm aint gotta be a real one it can be fake bate. i have tried this in fact i learned this from my mother. this can be used on just about any bate. i had a guy tell me dhow to use it for gar even witch i thought was pretty cool. he said cut the stocking at the knee place your bate in the toe the stocking tie it just above the hook and cast it will get stuck in the gars teeth and it will help to set the hook. if i hadnt tried the onion thing myself i would have thought it was crazy as well but it dose and i thank my best friend and my hubby for teaching me that trick.

i have done that with my x hubby in WA all ya do is you put a bit of air in to the worm so it looks like its a live longer it just puffs the worm up and it floats a little. as for walleye that is what my x used that method on the most that and some bullhead that he would catch to go shark fishing with that night. as far as legal you should check with your fish and game people they can tell you what is or is not legal.
