View Full Version : Discussion Heddon's 5 treble hook Minnow Lure
This is one example of a Heddon 5 treble hook Underwater minnow. Yes- 15 hook points! Called a "00", or a "double ought" and in the "strawberry" color. This wooden lure actually has five flattened sides. Notice the great Glass Eyes! Underwater Minnows of this type were very popular from 1900 into the 1940's, when the thinking was "more hooks, more fish"! They were weighted, with as many as four lead bellyweights built in! Sank like rocks, believe me, I took a beat up one fishing one time! Eventually, conservationism stepped in and many states outlawed lures with more than three trebles. New Jersey went a step further and made it illegal to use a lure with any more than three hook POINTS! By the end of the 1950's, five hook lures had disappeared. Another classic lure with a story to tell! Best---- JoeW

Hmmm. That's very interesting. On the other hand, these hooks probably tore up the mouth of a fish in a matter of seconds. Imagine if a fish was able to get away with this lure swallowed inside. The result would most likely be permanent damage.

Are these rare? I never see these in fishing stores
I totally agree about the harm done to a fish by multiple treble hooked lures! (See my post today under General Freshwater Fishing Talk). They could only be used in open, deeper water because they did sink like rocks! They stopped making five-hook lures in the mid-1950's, you won't see any in tackle stores today! They are quite desirable to collector's and depending on the maker and particular model, are worth---well, I'll swap you a couple dozen modern lures for one nice Heddon 00! Remember, these are vintage, collector's items- not to be taken out fishing and used! You wouldn't spend that old Morgan Silver Dollar on a couple packs of gum, would you? Thanks for all the interest in these vintage lure posts-- I'll continue to show off some "oldies" in my collection! Best---- JoeW
