Trailer hooks made easy

Adding trailer hooks to spinner baits can make the difference when bass are striking short. You can use surgical tubing to hole the hooks in place, but the process is time consuming and the small pieces of tubing are hard to work with in a boat. To avoid these problems, prepare your trailer hooks at home with this method. Buy a tube of thick rubber shoe repair adhesive ( Shoe Goo is one brand, Goop is another ). Give the eyes of your trailer hooks a liberal coat of adhesive, let it dry, and apply a second coat. The hook eyes now have a fixed rubber coating that will hold them in the correct position on your spinnerbait hook. :cool:

Do you downsize the trailer hook say you are using a a 5# what would you use as a trailer?

If anything, up size. I try to stay near the size of the factory hook on the bait, but may go up a size or two. Also, place the trailer hook down for open water or where there are few if any obstructions, and up in brushy, woody, or weedy waters to help prevent snags. ;)

Dugger, as for your example of a #5 hook, I'd probably use a #3 trailer. With a #1 hook, I'd go with a #1/0 or 2/0 hook. For #1/0 hooks on up I pretty much stick with the size on the bait and only go up one size if at all.

Spinners works on shallow lake trout during our runoff but hookups are low percentage because they tend to grab it to runoff with it, but its like they grab it side ways and just don't commit to swallowing.I have no problem with hardbaits with trebles .We use the spinners just to give a differant look and actully caught a few using spinners wid big curly trailer softbaits, will try it because the stinger im using tends to make the spinner swim
a little side ways . and also do you ever use circle hooks as trailers?

As circle hooks are kind of a closed gap design I think they would defeat the purpose. I use an open gap worm hook for my trailers.
