Could be catfish. If they are big then they will fight for a long time.

Absolutely! I caught a 25 pound flathead 2 years ago while bass fishing using a medium action baitcast rod and reel with 12 pound test line . Took me 20 minutes to boat it.

That fish never broke the water , the hole is a long deep run, with riffles top and bottom it's one of my favorite holes
this is another about 3 miles up

I know these are put and take fish, but a fish like this can last a long time in this creek, they have lot's of places to hide i catch 2 or three a year like this

John T- It's going to bring back nightmares, and I didn't have my "mystery fish" on for as long as you did! Few years ago, Cattauragus Creek in WNY. Big creek, in the Fall with Steelhead often running 12+ pounds. Ten pound line, I let fly with a 1/4 Little Cleo. Lure stopped, then a couple hard, heavy thumps that almost yanked me over forward! Fish turned, and ran directly downstream, rod yanked straight down parallel to the water, evidently intent on returning to Lake Erie, a mile away! It ran 100 yards downstream and kept on going, not pausing for a second! Just a slow, steady, deliberate run! I thumbed the spool to slow it down, nothing- didn't even phase it! Thumbed harder, and pop-- line broke down near the lure! I'm suspecting by the way it behaved, it was a Giant Lake Erie Brown Trout and I'm guessing 20+ pounds? But whatever it was, it was the strongest heaviest fish I've ever had on a line! Still wake up at night fighting that one! Best---- JoeW

Always makes you wonder if you've got the fish, or if the fish has you! Makes you feel helpless! :D Man, with a 5-wt outfit- what size tippet were you using and fly? Tell you the truth, and not to make you cry, but that unseen fish of yours does sound like a BIG Brown! Get 'im next time, John T.! Best---- JoeW
