The only brand I have ever owned is the Mora Hand Auger. Anyone out there got any input on the other brands and how they compare?

Ha! When I was ice fishing, the first and only hand auger I ever had was a Mora! And that's grinding through 2-3 feet of Lake Erie ice! Sharpened it once a year and it purred through the ice! I got tired of going out on the hard water with my long handled "ice spud" while watching the guys with Mora's get done in 1/4th the time! They all had Mora's!

First time ice fishing was when I learned why the ice spuds had a hole on the handle! Any one know what that little hole was for! Here's a hint- I was out the next day buying another spud! Boy, before I went to college I couldn't even spell "college graduate", now I are one! Best---- JoeW

And the answer is- The hole at the top of the spud was for tying a loop of rope around, which was looped around your hand. THAT way, when you first break through the ice, the spud didn't slip through your hands and end up in 30 feet of water on Lake Erie! :)

I was brought up using the " spud " and man, was it a pain in the butt to chisel through a foot of ice with that thing. tell ya what, if you were cold, that was the way to warm up. ive been fishing since i was a lil tyke, and im 30 now. last year was my second year using an auger. all the pros and cons i have heard said this. the mora auger ( blue ) was good, but you were either sharpening blades or buying new ones every year. i was told about the LAZER auger, also made by strikemaster. the blades are better, dont need sharpening every year ( or replaced ) and bores a hole even faster than the blue auger. this comming ice season will tell me if i need to replace my blades.... i dont think i have to though :)

my recommendation... the LAZER auger. give it a try, see what ya think.

Boy is this out of my League . So here is an old joke . HOW DO YOU CATCH A POLAR BEAR . First you cut a hole in the ice . Second You scatter peas around it . Third when the bear comes up to take a pea , you kick him in the ice hole . They told that joke on the Grand Ole Opera when I was a little guy . That was a looong time ago.
