Hey Mo65, you remember these? My neighbor dropped of some old rods & reels yesterday. Two of them are old Zebcos. A model 76 and a model 77 that had the reel built into the rod!! Never saw one of these before .They are cheapies, plastic construction with cheap gears that look like the old model car drive gears.
Also got a nice Daiwa ultra-light spinning rod and reel model 700C. The rod is a 5 foot back pack model that breaks down in 5 pieces. Nice!
There is also a VERY old baitcast reel mounted on a steel rod. When I get it cleaned up a bit I'll post a photo. It is stamped "Tripart" No. 780 on one side plate and has patent information on the other side plate .Part of that info reads Pat. Nov. 15, '34.

B or B,
Here's a link with info on your Tripart 780: http://www.meisselbach.info/tripart.htm
Speaking of old Zebco's...I just picked up this 733 hawg...with the intent to fish it...but after taking a good look at it...I may have to add this one to my vintage collection. I popped off the front cover, and this thing has never been fished! This was one of their all time classic models, with a star drag and selectable direct drive. It also has selectable anti-reverse and bait clicker. The 733 Hawg is equally at home bass or catfishing. These old work horses are getting tougher to find...but I may have to continue my search for one to fish...this one is just to clean to mess up!My two cents

Thanks so much Mo! From that link I was able to place the age of this reel (Tripart 580) from 1909 to 1923. It still works quite well. I'm going to clean up all the dirt and grease from it and the old rod (has to be at least as old) and try to more precisely age the reel. The cork handles on the rod are still in excellent shape. The rod is a steel 5' three piece model. Can't make out any markings on it as of yet. Will see what I have after cleaning it. I will not use any polishes or anything to reduce the patina on this great old reel! What line would be age appropriate for this reel? Silk? Dacron? shrug
I did a little research b or b...and found out that the first braided line(woven silk) was introduced in 1908...it replaced the traditional horsehair. It seems Dacron didn't come along 'til '48, but I feel it would be the choice for that reel if you were going to fish it. I just spooled an old baitcaster with dacron/mono leader, and it works great. I clean old reels with warm soapy water and an old toothbrush. Toothpaste will cut stubborn dried grease spots. As far as the steel rod, I found an easy way to clean those up. I just sanded off the rust...and applied instant gun blueing...it looks great.^!

Thanks Mo. That old reel's spool spins quite easily, so I'm actually tempted to try fishing it! What a great experience fishing an outfit that old! :D

The rod is stamped "Champion" Richardson, Chicago on the reel seat area. It is a 3 piece steel rod, 5' long.
Those Richardson rods are pretty good steel rods...if it has the guides...you should put that Tripart on it and test cast it. I found a beautiful Richardson on eBay, check this sweetie out.

My Richardson is much older than that one. It has a stamped steel trigger, formed into a curve, and the trigger is part of the reel seat ring which just slides over the reel seat on the reel. Not too stable! It is complete, has all the guides (agate lined?) but it is very stiff. Needs a complete sanding and blueing to clean it up.
Ahh...I know the trigger type you're speaking of...I believe it is from the same time frame as your Tripart reel...I agree...a little sturdier set-up would probably be better to fish. Can't wait to see what you put together. :D
