For a gentle cleaning method that works well try moistened baby wipes. The cleaning formula they contain is designed to cut through all the nasty stuff that stains your cork handles (not to mention Baby's bottom). And anything gentle enough for a baby's butt won't damage your cork!

I'm not a fan of cleaning cork handles- I like the "character" of looking well-used ( sort of like ME!). But admittedly, insect repelant, oil, fish slime, scales, sun tan lotion, etc can build up and it's time for a cleaning!

I've always used Formula 409- spray it on, let it sit, rub it around with your fingers and rinse! Amazing. RESIST the urge to scrub with anything or to use abrasives!! Once you break the "finish" on the cork, it becomes a mess!

Joe - to restore the "finish" on cork grips after cleaning, I use U-40 Cork Seal.

Get it from Jann's Netcraft (among others)

Plain ol' toothpaste works quite well also. And you can get it as "clean" as you wish if you don't want to take off all the patina.

I just read that the Mr. Clean white scrub pads work pretty good...Just use a little warm water with the pad, they let it air dry. Supposedly they will look next to new. I got this info from the "fishermen" magazine, it serves NY and Long Island

Grandma always said there's more than one way to clean a cork! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_8_218.gif
