Check it out guys...picked this up on eBay a few days ago...its a Pflueger Summit with original box and accessories. My grandfather had one just like this and fished with it 'till he died. Wish I could have got his, but the family must have sold it along with his other stuff. This one has already brought back many great memories. :)

Mo-- I have had and seen many Summits in collections, but I am speechless! That one is a museum piece! They do not get any better than that! And as to your Grandad, I have several pieces that were given to me by relatives-- "an old tackle item- great!..... the memories associated with it- priceless!". I'm glad for you, and I'm sure your Grandad is too. Best---- JoeW

Thanks Joe! I watched several of these sell in the last few weeks, and saw one in very similar in condition sell for $137.50. I think Grandpa may have been helping me on this one...I got it for $36! After holding it in my hands...I would have paid $3600...well...if I could have. Like you always say, this one is telling me stories! :)

Wow!!! What a super fine old Pfleuger!!!!! Great score mo and I'm glad you found it. I know the feeling....it isn't Dad or Grandpa's but it's the same kind. Beats not having any reminders.

What time period were those made?

What time period were those made?

Sharp, the bottom of the box has the inspector stamp dated 7/57...which would put it right about the time Gramps bought his. Am I right on this Joe?

Hi Mo--- and yep- that is the date stamp for that reel. That's one reason why it's nice to find a Pflueger reel in the box- they stamped (if you can still read it) the date on the bottom. I did some quick looking, and the Summits were first made 1926-27. The earliest one's had a much simpler scroll design. I think it was around 1935 when they went to the fancier scroll work. Made into the 1960's, then Pflueger dropped that model, but brought it back in the later 70's and 80's as a "modern" baitcaster. I think they (although foreign owned now) still make them. The Summits (as beautiful as they are!) were only Pfleueger's second best reel. The Supreme being the most expensive, then the Summit.
Yours is model 1993L? The L stands for "lightweight aluminum spool"--- wooooo- high tech, eh? And i don't know if your aware- if you unscrew (and I don't recommend yo do!) the big screw on the face place, there's a spare pawl for the LW inside. man- what a bonus!
I keep trying to picture your grandad walking into the local tackle store looking for a reel. i wonder what made him take the Summit? Was he looking at a Supreme and decided it wasn't worth the extra money? Did he look at Shakespeare's too? And I wonder what old lures were in that store. There were still some Glass Eyed plugs around then! Ask your Summit, it's got plenty of stories! Great, great reel, Mo! Best---- JoeW

Cool Joe! Didn't know what the "L" meant...do now! I knew about the spare pawl, but you're right, I'm not touchin' a single screw on this piece. Hee hee...If you knew my grandpa...you would know exactly why he picked the summit. If he was going out to the garage to change his oil, he would still put on a tie! He drove a Caddy coupe deville...and it shined almost as much as his shoes. He was a POW in WWII, and I think the hell he went through there really made him appreciate the good things in life!

Aren't Grandads great! Yours sounds like a great guy of the "gentleman gender! My Grandad worked for pennzoil cleaning out used oil drums for 50 years. But on Sunday- he'd spit shine himself up in his suit and tie, put on his old brown hat, we'd go to church, and then for a "Sunday drive" in his old Buick, and he'd smoke his pipe-- the only vice the man had. Oh yea- he never fished- always too busy working. Memories like that are great! Best---- joew

Folks were just classier back then. My Dad at 82 is still that way. I should talk, I'm the biggest "jeans & T-shirt" slob there is.
