I got the ball rolling today on my new lure. It has gone a little faster than I originally thought it would. Still a lot to do in the way of shaping it out and finishing it. I do have the roughed out lure together though. I will post up each pic in its own "reply box" That way It will be easier to explain what all I am doing as I go along. Please post up reply's and feel free to add any suggestions or advice you may have.
The first pic I am posting is the original drawing I came up with. My idea was for a lipless crankbait with flexible plastic fins. I want to mimic a real "shinner" (depends on my paintjob) as close as possible.
In the pic, "A" is the front fins. I want to put these fins on in the same degree of angle as the flat part of the head (what will act as a lip). This should help by not fighting the lure as it pulls through the water. I hope it will act as a hydrofoil and actually help it dive.
B of course is the back fin. I hope this will help it track. I tried to keep it relatively small for realism and so the lure will have a little wiggle action.
C is the tail fin. This may keep the lure from producing a wiggle action, not sure. I just hope that the realism it adds will counter for any bad assets.

Here is the original drawing plan, pattern and the rough blank. The slit I cut in the front of the blank, marked "A" is for the front fins to fit into. Once the lure is shaped I will make the fins and epoxy them into place.

After cutting the rough blank out on my scroll saw, I then sawed it in half. This will allow me to epoxy the plastic fins in the middle of the two halves. Due to the fact that my saw cut may not be 100% perfect, I will turn the blank and use what was the outsides as the inside. This will give a perfect fit and the outside still has to be shaped so if it is off a little it won't be a problem.

To make my fins I am using the plastic lid off of an Ice cream bucket.

Here is the rough blank, the plastic fins sans the front ones ( I will make those when the final shaping is done). Also is A - The sinker I am incorporating for ballast. B - The eye screws that will be used for the attachment point and the bottom treble. C - The hooks I am using to make my tail hooking method.

In this next pic, notice the grooves I cut into the inside of the halves of the rough blank (A). The hooks will epoxy into these grooves (C) with the bent eyes going into the small hole (B) and will be sandwiched between the wood and the plastic fins.

This pic shows all the parts plus the channel I carved for the sinker (A). Also the plastic is cut away (B) for the sinker. This will also allow the epoxy to have a small degree of wood to wood contact hopefully giving a little stronger bond.

Here it is all clamped up in my high dollar rich man clamping system. :D

...and here it is after the epoxy has dried and its out of the clamps. You can see the fins and the hooks in the tail. Now, with it all assembled I have to start the whittlin' and shaping. I will post up pics at the different stages and try to give the best views. God Bless. Dave

I can tell you've put a lot of thought into this one. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
That looks real good so far.
I have to admit I was bit by the lure bug when you made the post
on Lil Dave. I can't wait to see the rest of your post.
I hope more members will post some of the work they do.
Keep it comming.

Atta boy buddy . I was wondering when you would get a chance to start a new lure . I think I posted this before but if you want to make a cheap sealer before you paint it put white packing peanuts in a jar of acetone i.e. finger nail polish . They will melt into a solution that can be painted on as a sealer . That is looking real good so far . I am anticipating the end result .

This is the lure after the front fins have been epoxied in. Now I have to do some final sanding and shaping and it will be ready to put the eye screws and front hook in. From there it will be ready to paint.
It's really comming into shape.
If your lucky you may be able to fish it once or twice before the weather
shuts down your fishing, Looking Good.

If the weather drops to freezing you'll still have several days before the fish go into winter stall . Sort of a last minute feeding frenzy .

This is my underlayment paint coat. I painted the whole thing white then came in with black over the top to hopefully darken the top side under the final coat. This will also serve as the scale colors. As you all can see my painting skills are still on about the kindergarten level ha ha. The look I am going for on this lure is a sort of crappy minnow/ shiner type.
Man! How far you've come! Wish I could do that, but I'll be content just to sit back and watch what YOU do! Keep up the pics! Best---- JoeW

...and here is the finished lure. All I have to do is put the belly hook and split rings on it.
As I said in my post that I made when this was all just an idea, I am going to make it a traveling lure. B or B was the first one to make it known that he would like to give it a whirl so I will start by sending it to him. Any one else that would like to give it a drag can get in touch with him and he can pass it on.
I really hope it works and will catch a fish. I haven't tested it so it will be a surprise to us all as to how it functions. I am pretty excited to find out how the fins I put on it affects it's action. I'm thinking they may inhibit any wobble but I'm not sure ( it may go crazy lol). Please feel free to give an assessment of it when you try it. Also I am open to advice or ideas on any ways to improve it.
There are a few things on this lure I want to do differently on my next one. For one, I will add a belly fin also. Second, the front fins I want to turn so they lay more flat to the body and not project down in the "slicing" position they are in. I also want to find a more compatible paint for the plastic. The acrylic I used really didn't work very well. I just hope it stays on.
I want to thank everyone for the kind words and encouragement. I had a lot of fun on this lure and I really hope it works just dandy. God Bless. Dave
Dave you hit this one out of the park.
what a great job. I can wait for B&B to post how it works.

Thanks dB, I'll be looking forward to using it. I won't get a chance to fish until January though due to the outrageous work load I get this time of year. I put in 15 1/2 hours today and this will be a normal day until Christmas, including at least 8 hours Saturdays and Sundays.

I'm to wore out to work like that . Probably kill me .
Dave that is one cool design bro . I think you can work it as a crank and a jerk bait . You can get some lures to run on their side wounded like if you put a split shot on one prong of a forward treble hook .
