A few weeks ago an acquaintance of mine responded to a thread of mine on another forum. He told me he had 3 bamboo fly rods that belonged to his late Father and Grandfather. He wanted to use them but was afraid he'd break them. After some cajoling from me he took one out after bluegill and was hooked on using them.

Friday evening he arrived at my home to spend the night so we could get an early morning start for wild trout. He brought all the rods and the prize was a Philipson, 9', 3/2 Powr Pakt from the late 50's. Sadly I forgot to take any pics of the rods. Early Saturday saw us on the water after trout.

The fishing was great but man, was the catching slow. I was an hour into it before I finally landed this guy.

As is normal, my lack of photography skills is apparent. The low angle of the sun doesn't allow the brilliant colors of this fish show through. I was using a 7', 4 wt., 2/1 Pocket Watre rods bamboo rod rigged with a # 4 DT Terenzio silk line and a silk leader by the same maker, 6X tippet with a #16 EHC and an olive wooly booger of my modification.

It was a long time between fish before I finally coaxed this fella into eating my dropper.

I landed one more about the same size as the previous fish and that was it for the day. At least I didn't get skunked.

We were about to pack it in when my friend finally hooked his first wild trout on his dads bamboo rod. Two more followed in quick succession. He was grinnin' from ear to ear yellin' "my goal is met!!!!". Before we got home we were planning our next excursion and an acquaintance had become a friend.
