View Full Version : Catching Walleye Off-Shore
Hello,
There are a few techniques for catching walleye off-shore in a river. I have never tried this method in lakes but it could work too.
The first and best technique is using a lead head jig, plastic grub (colors - light green, orange, and red), and a nice fat worm. I prefer to use 3/8, 5/16 and 1/2 oz jig.
Start by simply casting your hook out and reeling in. Let your hook sink down almost to the bottom. Do not real in too fast or too slow. You want the hook to stay near the bottom. If you feel the jig is bouncing on the bottom, then this may cause you to snag it on a rock. Avoid this issue by reeling it in a bit more faster.
The second technique is to use a nice sized sinker, a hook, and a fat worm. You should place the sinker around 3 feet above the hook. This technique may also hook other fish.
Got a better way to catch walleye off-shore? Post it here!
Best Regards

I've heard using a "worm blower" or hypodermic needle works well. I am also a fan of the floating jighead.
I fish off of a dam with a lot of rip rap and get snagged every now and then. I bought a "bottom bouncer" but haven't tried it.

Has anyone tried casting with a "bottom bouncer?" After looking at it, it looks like it would work well dropped straight off of a dock or boat but I'd imagine casting it could cause a nasty tangle.
Any tips or experience with the "bottom bouncer" would be great!

These are also know as "bottom walkers". Great for trolling, not for casting. I've caught many Walleye using these. A great way to get that hook to the bottom.
For Trolling:
Don't forget that when fish bite then you will feel a "pull" instead of the usual "jerk". The rest of the time you'll be feeling the rocks on the bottom. Make sure to constantly check your hook for lake weed.

Considering I don't yet own a boat I should probably start looking for that receipt and take the "bottom walkers" back! Thanks for the advice.

I've been looking for a small Jon boat or something. The trouble is convincing SWMBO that it is worth the moolah!
